A fairytale village nestled on the edge of France

Overlooked by snow-topped mountains reflected in the glimmer of the lake, Annecy feels like a romance only an eighteenth-century poet could dream of. Its buildings stand strong with tales of history, their pastel facades echoing the charm of a fairytale village. Cobbled streets that once bore witness to rivalry now guide visitors towards freshly baked delicacies and enchanting boutiques, filling the air with a warmth that reignites belief, even for those who outgrew fairytales long ago.

Often overlooked by travellers rushing towards the glamour of Paris or the dramatic landscapes of Switzerland, Annecy sits quietly on the border, offering everything without the crowds or queues. There’s no vibration of impatient tourists here, no familiar complaints, simply time to wander. Frequently referred to as the Venice of France, the comparison barely does it justice. This boutique destination offers an experience entirely its own, one that feels both intimate and timeless.

Wander into the old town and you’ll stumble upon a traditional market held three times a week, a sense of community many places have seen fade with time. On luckier days, the streets come alive with music, food and arts markets, transforming the town into a celebration of culture. Local brews are poured into plastic cups, five-cheese fondues are served generously and in November, the town even hosts a festival dedicated to pigs, drawing laughter and curiosity in equal measure. Traditional instruments carry music through the streets, and whether or not you’re fully swept up by the magic of the French Alps, the authenticity of these moments is undeniable.

The cuisine is no different. We dined at a small restaurant on the edge of town, just seconds from one of the winding rivers that weave through Annecy. Its deep red exterior hints at the French charm that continues inside, from rich onion soup to indulgent cheese fondue. Teddy bears in the windows and checked tablecloths feel lifted straight from a classic French film set, making a wholesome meal the perfect way to round off a visit to this special place.

We visited in mid-November, when the town felt calm and reflective, but Annecy offers adventure year round. In the warmer months, heading to the summit of Col de la Forclaz is a must. Standing at over 1,250 metres, the view from the top is surreal, stretching across the lake and mountains below. For the brave, paragliding back down offers an unforgettable rush, an experience guaranteed to take your breath away.
For those who prefer both feet firmly on the ground, Lake Annecy offers a quieter kind of magic. Hiring a paddle boat and drifting across the water creates a moment suspended in time. Whether alone or with someone special, it becomes a snapshot where everything else fades away. In that moment, the charm of Annecy reveals itself fully. Not as a place to rush through, but one to feel.
